Why PRP is discussed in so many contexts

The reason for the wide range of applications lies in how it works. The growth factors from the platelets are not specialised in a single tissue but are part of a general repair programme of the body. This is why PRP is being tested in very different specialties, from hair medicine and dermatology to dentistry and orthopaedics.

Beyond the areas mentioned, the specialist literature describes PRP in a whole range of disciplines, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, sports medicine, plastic surgery, the healing of chronic wounds and other surgical specialties. This diversity shows how broad the interest in the body’s own growth factors is. On its own, however, it says nothing about how well the procedure is supported by evidence in any particular area.

It is important to note that the strength of the evidence differs from area to area. What has been well studied in one application may only be at an early stage in another. There is no blanket statement about the effectiveness of PRP; it has to be considered separately for each area.
